Available TODAY! Life-changing inspiration in just 288 pages. Vegan ultramarathoner Scott Jurek may run for 24 hours straight, munching on homemade rice balls wrapped in seaweed, through the unearthly heat of Death Valley and the harsh mountain passes of the Rockies, on sprained ankles and with terrifying hallucinations, but his story is more simple.
It’s a story about determination, about natural talent and a drive to succeed, to be the absolute best at whatever it is you want to be. It’s a story of a skinny kid with high blood pressure, a strict dad, and a sick mom, who found happiness in the wooded trails of his Minnesota youth, who took that happiness and made himself a living legend.
But you don’t have to be an ultramarathoner to learn something from this book; you don’t have to be a runner at all. You don’t have to be a vegan, or a vegetarian, or an organic zealot: I’m not any of those things. But I couldn’t put it down. Scott’s world is an unknown to me. I’ve never crossed paths with the Tarahumara of Copper Canyon, I’ve never made my own rice milk, and the only time I’ve run barefoot is chasing after the ice cream truck as a kid, but this book is an inspiration, Scott’s success is an inspiration, and every character, every person he’s come into contact with in his world, is an inspiration.
